turn off spiderman
alan and i just came back from watching the spider-man: turn off the dark ‘preview’ - a term i hesitate to use mainly because we paid the full price for these tickets. all i can say is, thank god i didn’t buy more expensive tickets - this show blows.
i know it’s a preview, but that’s exactly my point. nobody expects a smooth-running show, but the irony is that spider-man’s biggest problem isn’t technical glitches, but the a lame and weak script. it doesn’t help that the characters are either unlikable or nonsensical. reeve carney’s spider-man is one-dimensional (not to mention, limited vocally) - mainly angst without justification. jennifer damiano as mary jane watson was off-pitch, and perpetually offered non-sequitor, throwaway lines. you had a bunch of kids, the ‘geek chorus’ (oh har-de-har), who serve as narrators as the show: not that it helped because they certainly didn’t help make the confusing script clearer. by far the character who’s the most annoying is arachne - the weakest link in the entire musical yet VERY central to the play.
sure, the sets are beautiful and it’ll be a while before you get tired of the aerial acrobatics, but this play was nowhere near ready to be debuted before a live audience, and certainly looks nowhere close to a proper opening in january 11 unless the script is completely rewritten and the cast rehauled.

it’s raining, which is nice - you hardly get rain in philadelphia. a’s sound asleep and the cranberries are playing. i miss the rain back home, i love the howling and patter on the window panes. rain’s good when you’re sad, or when you’re happy, but it’s mostly good when you’re feeling nostalgic.
rip ah kim :(

my favorite word at the moment is occipital. in 1999 it was animal. i loved how the ‘n’ and the ‘m’ were so close together, how the nnnn and mmmm buzzed when you rolled the word slowly around your tongue.
now i like occipital. i love how the two ‘c’s sit next to each other. it sounds like a word that’ll make you spit saliva a lot, but it’s not really. also the occipital region is pretty damn cool (and if you watch as much forensic crime shows as i do, it’s useful to know what the CSIs are talking about).

so i’ve been cooking, which is actually rather therapeutic especially when you’re trying to save money for your thanksgiving break travel plans and other grand schemes (like south america in winter 2011). it’s nice cooking for one (bite-sized portions that get prepared really fast), but it will probably be nicer cooking for two.
